കാണുന്നു, കേൾക്കുന്നു
Seeing and hearing

ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ see, watch; മലയാളത്തിൽ 'കാണുക'. ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ hear, listen; മലയാളത്തിൽ 'കേൾക്കുക'. 'ഞാൻ സിനിമ കാണുന്നു.' 'അവൾ പാട്ട് കേൾക്കുന്നു.'

Malayalam does not split see from watch, or hear from listen. ഞാൻ സിനിമ കാണുന്നു is both 'I see a film' and 'I am watching a film'; അവൾ പാട്ട് കേൾക്കുന്നു is both 'she hears a song' and 'she is listening to a song'. Whatever is seen or heard stands right in front of the verb with no ending on it at all.

'പറയുക' — 'ഞാൻ മലയാളം പറയുന്നു.' 'അവൻ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പറയുന്നു.' ദേവൻ പറയുന്നു, മീര കേൾക്കുന്നു.

പറയുക is 'to say' and equally 'to speak a language': ഞാൻ മലയാളം പറയുന്നു. It is also your reporting verb — ദേവൻ പറയുന്നു, മീര കേൾക്കുന്നു, Devan speaks and Meera listens. Repeating somebody's exact words needs one more little word, എന്ന്, which waits until level 5; for now report that a person speaks, and what language.

'കേൾക്കുക' ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുക: ഏ ദീർഘം, ചില്ല് 'ൾ', പിന്നെ ഇരട്ട 'ക്ക'. വർത്തമാനകാലം 'കേൾക്കുന്നു' — ഇരട്ടിപ്പ് ഇവിടെയും ഉണ്ട്. 'കാണുക' വേറെ: ഇരട്ടിപ്പ് ഇല്ല, 'കാണുന്നു'.

Spell കേൾക്കുക carefully: a long ഏ, the chillu ൾ (never ള്), then a doubled ക്ക. Like പഠിക്കുക and കുടിക്കുക from earlier lessons, the doubling stays in the present: കേൾക്കുന്നു. കാണുക has no doubling to keep, so it is simply കാണുന്നു.

ഇപ്പോൾ ചുറ്റും നോക്കുക. ഉറക്കെ പറയുക: 'ഞാൻ ________ കാണുന്നു.' 'ഞാൻ ________ കേൾക്കുന്നു.' 'ഞാൻ മലയാളം പറയുന്നു.'

Look around you and say three sentences aloud, filling the blanks with things in the room: ഞാൻ ________ കാണുന്നു (I see …), ഞാൻ ________ കേൾക്കുന്നു (I hear …), and finally ഞാൻ മലയാളം പറയുന്നു. Then put on any Malayalam song, and announce what you are doing: ഞാൻ പാട്ട് കേൾക്കുന്നു.
