Three study verbs, and the one move that makes the present tense: drop -ഉക, add -ഉന്നു.

വാക്കുപട്ടികയിൽ ക്രിയ '-ഉക' രൂപത്തിൽ ആണ്: പഠിക്കുക, വായിക്കുക, എഴുതുക. വാക്യത്തിൽ '-ഉക' മാറ്റി '-ഉന്നു' ചേർക്കുന്നു: പഠിക്കുന്നു, വായിക്കുന്നു, എഴുതുന്നു.

Word lists and dictionaries give a Malayalam verb in its -ഉക form: പഠിക്കുക, വായിക്കുക, എഴുതുക. To put it into a sentence about now, make one small swap — take off -ഉക and put on -ഉന്നു. പഠിക്കുക → പഠിക്കുന്നു. വായിക്കുക → വായിക്കുന്നു. എഴുതുക → എഴുതുന്നു. The same swap works on every verb you have met: പോകുക → പോകുന്നു, വരുക → വരുന്നു, ചെയ്യുക → ചെയ്യുന്നു.

ചില ക്രിയകളിൽ '-ക്കുക' ഉണ്ട്: പഠിക്കുക, വായിക്കുക, കുടിക്കുക, കഴിക്കുക, ഇരിക്കുക. 'എഴുതുക', 'പോകുക', 'കഴുകുക' — ഈ ക്രിയകളിൽ '-ക്കുക' ഇല്ല. വർത്തമാനത്തിൽ രണ്ടും ഒന്നുതന്നെ: -ഉന്നു.

You may have noticed two shapes among the verbs: some carry a doubled -ക്കുക (പഠിക്കുക, വായിക്കുക, കുടിക്കുക, കഴിക്കുക, ഇരിക്കുക) and some do not (എഴുതുക, പോകുക, കഴുകുക). The difference is real and it has a name and a whole lesson waiting in level 10 — but in the present tense it changes nothing at all. Both groups take plain -ഉന്നു, so you can leave the two shapes alone for now.

'ഞാനും വരുന്നു' — 'ഞാൻ' + '-ഉം'. ചില്ല് 'ൻ' സ്വരത്തിനു മുൻപിൽ 'ന' ആയി മാറുന്നു: ഞാൻ + ഉം → ഞാനും. ക്രിയ ഒന്നുതന്നെ: ഞാൻ പഠിക്കുന്നു · അവൾ പഠിക്കുന്നു · നമ്മൾ പഠിക്കുന്നു.

ഞാനും വരുന്നു means 'I am coming too' — the -ഉം you used for lists also means 'also' when it sits on a single word, and the chillu ൻ opens into ന before it, exactly as in ദേവനാണ്. And once more, look at the verb across the three subjects ഞാൻ, അവൾ, നമ്മൾ: പഠിക്കുന്നു, പഠിക്കുന്നു, പഠിക്കുന്നു. One form, always.

ഇനി ഉറക്കെ പറയുക: 'ഞാൻ മലയാളം പഠിക്കുന്നു. ഞാൻ പാഠം വായിക്കുന്നു. ഞാൻ എഴുതുന്നു.' പിന്നെ 'ഞാൻ' മാറ്റുക — 'അവൻ', 'അവൾ', 'നമ്മൾ' — ക്രിയ അതുതന്നെ.

Say the three sentences aloud: ഞാൻ മലയാളം പഠിക്കുന്നു. ഞാൻ പാഠം വായിക്കുന്നു. ഞാൻ എഴുതുന്നു. Now run them again swapping only the first word — അവൻ, അവൾ, നമ്മൾ, അവർ — and keep the verb untouched. That is the whole point: you are not changing the verb because Malayalam never does. Finish by telling somebody what you are doing right now: ഞാൻ മലയാളം പഠിക്കുന്നു.
