വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

'വാതിൽ', 'ജനൽ' — രണ്ടു വാക്കിന്റെയും അവസാനം ചില്ല് 'ൽ' ആണ്. 'വാതില്' ശരി അല്ല. ചില്ലിന് സ്വരം ഇല്ല; 'ല്' എന്നതിന് ചെറിയ ഒരു സ്വരം ഉണ്ട്.

Both വാതിൽ and ജനൽ end in the chillu letter ൽ — a bare l with no vowel at all after it. Writing വാതില് or ജനല് with a candrakkala instead is simply wrong here: that spelling carries the tiny half-u vowel you hear at the end of അത് and ഉണ്ട്, and these two words do not have it. The five chillus ൺ ൻ ർ ൽ ൾ are worth learning by eye now; you have already met ൻ in ഞാൻ and അവൻ.

ചില്ല് 'ൽ' സ്വരത്തിനു മുൻപിൽ 'ല' ആയി മാറുന്നു: വാതിൽ + ഉം → വാതിലും; ജനൽ + ഉം → ജനലും. 'ഞാൻ' എന്ന വാക്കിലും ഇതുതന്നെ: ഞാൻ + ഉം → ഞാനും.

A chillu is only a chillu at the end of a word. As soon as a vowel follows, it opens up into an ordinary consonant with that vowel attached: വാതിൽ + ഉം → വാതിലും, ജനൽ + ഉം → ജനലും, and in exactly the same way ഞാൻ + ഉം → ഞാനും, ദേവൻ + ആണ് → ദേവനാണ്. Nothing is lost — the letter simply stops standing alone.

രണ്ടു വാക്ക് ഒന്നിച്ച് പറയുന്നു — രണ്ടിലും '-ഉം' വേണം: മേശയും കസേരയും. ഇടയിൽ 'യ' വരുന്നു: മേശ + ഉം → മേശയും.

To list two things, Malayalam puts -ഉം on both of them — never a word for 'and' in between: മേശയും കസേരയും, വാതിലും ജനലും. When the word ends in a vowel, the familiar യ glide appears first: മേശ + ഉം → മേശയും, കസേര + ഉം → കസേരയും, മുറി + ഉം → മുറിയും. The same glide is why ഏത് മുറി + ആണ് comes out as മുറിയാണ്.
