വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

'ഇത് പാത്രം ആണ്' — 'ആണ്' ഇത് എന്ത് എന്ന് പറയുന്നു. 'ഇവിടെ പാത്രം ഉണ്ട്' — 'ഉണ്ട്' പാത്രം ഇവിടെ ഉണ്ടോ ഇല്ലയോ എന്ന് പറയുന്നു. 'ഉണ്ട്' എന്നതിന് നേരെ എതിര് 'ഇല്ല'.

Two different jobs, two different words. ആണ് tells you what a thing is — ഇത് പാത്രം ആണ്, this is a pot. ഉണ്ട് tells you that a thing is there at all — ഇവിടെ പാത്രം ഉണ്ട്, there is a pot here. Its negative is the ഇല്ല you already use for 'no': കത്തി ഇവിടെ ഇല്ല. Add the question suffix -ഓ and you can ask across a whole kitchen: ഉപ്പ് ഉണ്ടോ? അരി ഉണ്ടോ?

സ്ഥലം പറയാൻ 'ഇവിടെ', 'അവിടെ' മതി. 'ഉണ്ട്' ചേരുമ്പോൾ ഒരുമിച്ചും എഴുതാം: ഇവിടെ + ഉണ്ട് → ഇവിടെയുണ്ട്; അവിടെ + ഉണ്ട് → അവിടെയുണ്ട്.

Notice that no word here carries a place ending. Malayalam does have one — it is what turns അടുക്കള into 'in the kitchen' — but it arrives in level 3, and until then ഇവിടെ and അവിടെ carry every place you need. When ഉണ്ട് glues onto them a യ slips in, exactly as it did with ആണ്: ഇവിടെയുണ്ട്, അവിടെയുണ്ട്. Both the joined and the separate spelling are correct.

'അരി' വേറെ, 'ചോറ്' വേറെ — രണ്ടും ഒന്നല്ല. 'ഉപ്പ്' എഴുതുമ്പോൾ ഇരട്ട 'പ്പ' വേണം. 'പാത്രം' എന്നാൽ കലം, പ്ലേറ്റ്, ഗ്ലാസ് — എല്ലാം.

Malayalam splits what English calls rice into two words: അരി is the raw grain in the sack, ചോറ് is what comes out of the pot. Asking for അരി in a restaurant would be odd. Watch the spelling of ഉപ്പ് — a doubled പ്പ, then the small ് of the half-u. പാത്രം is the wide word for any vessel: a cooking pot, a serving dish, a plate.

Finish by asking somebody — or yourself — ചായ ഉണ്ടോ? Five nouns and two verbs, and you can already inventory a room.
