ചായയോ കാപ്പിയോ?
Tea or coffee?

'സുഖമാണോ?' — ഇവിടെ '-ഓ' ഒരു വാക്കിൽ. ഇപ്പോൾ അത് രണ്ടു വാക്കിൽ വരുന്നു: 'ചായയോ കാപ്പിയോ?' രണ്ടിൽ ഒന്ന് തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുക.

You already met -ഓ as the yes/no question suffix in സുഖമാണോ?. Hang it on two words instead of one and it becomes 'or': ചായയോ കാപ്പിയോ?. Again there is no separate word — the suffix does everything, and the listener answers by naming one of the two. It is the same design as -ഉം in the last lesson: mark both items, not the gap between them.

'-ഉം' ചേരുന്ന അതേ രീതി തന്നെ: ചായ + ഓ → ചായയോ. കാപ്പി + ഓ → കാപ്പിയോ. വെള്ളം + ഓ → വെള്ളമോ ('ം' 'മ' ആകുന്നു). പാൽ + ഓ → പാലോ.

It attaches just like -ഉം, with one difference worth noticing. After a vowel, യ slides in: ചായയോ, കാപ്പിയോ. A chillu opens up: പാൽ → പാലോ. But the ം of വെള്ളം becomes മ here, not വ: വെള്ളമോ, ഭക്ഷണമോ. So it is വെള്ളവും with -ഉം and വെള്ളമോ with -ഓ.

കുടിക്കുക — ചായ, കാപ്പി, പാൽ, വെള്ളം. കഴിക്കുക — ചോറ്, കറി, പച്ചക്കറി. രണ്ടു ക്രിയ വേറെ വേറെ.

Drinks take കുടിക്കുക and solid food takes കഴിക്കുക, exactly as English splits drink from eat: ഞാൻ ചായ കുടിക്കുന്നു beside ഞാൻ ചോറ് കഴിക്കുന്നു. Both are -ക്കുക verbs, so both make their present the ordinary way, and the thing drunk or eaten stands bare in front of them.

ഒരു അതിഥി വരുന്നു. ചോദിക്കുക: 'ചായയോ കാപ്പിയോ? പാലോ വെള്ളമോ? പഞ്ചസാര?' പിന്നെ മറുപടിയും പറയുക: 'ഞാൻ ചായ കുടിക്കുന്നു.'

Play host out loud. Offer the three choices in order — ചായയോ കാപ്പിയോ? പാലോ വെള്ളമോ? പഞ്ചസാര? — then swap seats and answer as the guest: ഞാൻ ചായ കുടിക്കുന്നു, or simply ഇല്ല, നന്ദി. Do it twice, once choosing tea and once choosing coffee, until both suffixes feel automatic.
