പോകുക, വരുക, ചെയ്യുക — പദപ്പട്ടിക ഇങ്ങനെ പറയുന്നു. വാക്യത്തിൽ അവസാനത്തെ 'ക' മാറുന്നു, 'ന്നു' വരുന്നു: പോകുന്നു, വരുന്നു, ചെയ്യുന്നു, ഇരിക്കുന്നു, നിൽക്കുന്നു.

Word lists give a Malayalam verb in its -ഉക form: പോകുക to go, വരുക to come. To talk about now, drop that final ക and put -ന്നു in its place: പോകു + ന്നു = പോകുന്നു. It covers both English presents at once — I go and I am going are the same Malayalam sentence.

ഞാൻ പോകുന്നു. നീ പോകുന്നു. അവൻ പോകുന്നു. അവൾ പോകുന്നു. അവർ പോകുന്നു. ഞങ്ങൾ പോകുന്നു. ക്രിയ ഒന്നുതന്നെ — ആൺ, പെൺ, ഒന്ന്, പലത്: ഒരു മാറ്റവും ഇല്ല.

Here is the headline fact of the whole language, and it is good news. The verb never changes for person, for number or for gender. ഞാൻ പോകുന്നു · നീ പോകുന്നു · അവൾ പോകുന്നു · അവർ പോകുന്നു — one and the same പോകുന്നു throughout. Tamil, Kannada and Hindi all make you learn a table of endings here; Malayalam has none to learn. One tense, one form, finished.

ക്രിയ വാക്യത്തിന്റെ അവസാനം വരുന്നു: 'ഞാൻ ഇവിടെ ഇരിക്കുന്നു.' ക്രിയ ആരെയും കാണിക്കുന്നില്ല. അതുകൊണ്ട് 'ഞാൻ', 'നീ', 'അവൻ' എന്നിവ പറയുന്നു.

Two consequences follow. First, the verb sits at the end of the sentence, after everything else. Second, because പോകുന്നു tells you nothing about who is going, Malayalam normally states the subject out loud — ഞാൻ, നീ, അവൾ, അവർ. Leave it out and your listener genuinely will not know whom you mean.

ഇനി ഉറക്കെ പറയുക: 'ഞാൻ പോകുന്നു. നീ പോകുന്നു. അവൻ പോകുന്നു. അവൾ പോകുന്നു. അവർ പോകുന്നു.' പിന്നെ 'വരുക', 'ഇരിക്കുക' എന്നിവയും അങ്ങനെ പറയുക.

Say the five-person chain aloud with പോകുന്നു, listening to how the verb refuses to move: ഞാൻ പോകുന്നു, നീ പോകുന്നു, അവൻ പോകുന്നു, അവൾ പോകുന്നു, അവർ പോകുന്നു. Then run വരുന്നു and ഇരിക്കുന്നു through the same five subjects. Finish by describing your own room out loud in three sentences — who is sitting, who is standing, who is going.
