ഇവൻ ആരാണ്?

ഗീത — രവി, ഇവൻ ആരാണ്?
Ravi, who is this?
രവി — ഇവൻ ദേവനാണ്. ദേവൻ ഇവിടെയുണ്ട്.
This is Devan. Devan is here with us.
ഗീത — അവൾ ആരാണ്? മീരയാണോ?
And who is she? Is that Meera?
രവി — അതെ, അവൾ മീരയാണ്. അവൾ ഇവിടെയില്ല, അവിടെയാണ്.
Yes, she is Meera. She is not here, she is over there.
ഗീത — ഇവൾ ആരാണ്?
And who is this one?
രവി — ഇവൾ ലീലയാണ്. ലീല എന്റെ കൂട്ടുകാരിയാണ്.
This is Leela. Leela is a friend of mine.
ഗീത — ശരി. അവർ ആരാണ്?
I see. And who is that gentleman?
രവി — അവർ രാമൻ സാർ ആണ്. 'അവൻ' അല്ല — 'അവർ'!
That is Raman Sir. Not അവൻ — അവർ!

വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

'ഇ-' അടുത്ത്, 'അ-' അകലെ — ഇത് / അത്, ഇവിടെ / അവിടെ പോലെ തന്നെ. ഇവൻ / അവൻ, ഇവൾ / അവൾ, ഇവർ / അവർ.

The same two-way pointing you learned in lesson 4 runs straight through the pronouns. ഇ- is what is near the speaker and അ- is what is away: ഇവൻ / അവൻ, ഇവൾ / അവൾ, ഇവർ / അവർ. Once you have noticed the pattern you never have to learn these as separate words — you build them. In everyday talk the അ- forms do most of the work, since you usually talk about people who are not standing at your elbow.

'അവൻ', 'അവൾ' — കുട്ടികൾ, അടുത്ത കൂട്ടുകാർ. മുതിർന്നവർക്കും അപരിചിതർക്കും 'അവർ'. 'അവർ' = they, 'അവർ' = ബഹുമാനം.

Here is the social rule, and it matters more than the grammar. അവൻ and അവൾ are familiar — fine for a child, a close friend, a younger brother, and rude for anyone you owe respect to. For a teacher, an elder, a customer, a stranger, Malayalam uses the plural അവർ for one single person. So അവർ is both 'they' and a courteous 'he' or 'she', and the context tells you which. When in doubt, say അവർ.

ക്രിയ മാറുന്നില്ല: അവൻ ദേവനാണ്; അവൾ മീരയാണ്; അവർ രാമൻ സാർ ആണ്. ഒരേ 'ആണ്' എല്ലാവർക്കും.

Look at what does not happen. അവൻ ദേവനാണ്, അവൾ മീരയാണ്, അവർ രാമൻ സാർ ആണ് — one and the same ആണ് for he, for she, for them. Malayalam verbs never change for person, number or gender, and this is the first place you can see it plainly. It is the best news in the language: there are no ending tables waiting for you, in this tense or any other. Because the verb tells you nothing about who is acting, the subject is normally spoken aloud rather than dropped.

രാമൻ സാർ — ശരിയായ വാക്ക് തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുക. Referring to Raman Sir — which word?
________ മീരയാണ്. Complete: 'She is Meera.'
അവൻ + ആണ് → ? Join these two into one written word.
വാക്യം ഉണ്ടാക്കുക — 'He is not here.' Arrange the words.
ചേർത്തു വായിക്കുക. Match the word to its meaning.

ഉപയോഗിക്കുക · Use it

ഇനി മൂന്നു വാക്യം ഉറക്കെ പറയുക: 'അവൻ … ആണ്.' 'അവൾ … ആണ്.' 'അവർ … ആണ്.' മൂന്നിലും 'ആണ്' ഒന്നുതന്നെ.

Think of three real people and say a sentence about each, out loud. A child: അവൻ … ആണ്. A friend: അവൾ … ആണ്. Someone you respect: അവർ … ആണ്. Then say all three in a row and listen to what stays the same — ആണ്, unchanged, while only the pronoun moves. That is the shape of every Malayalam verb you will ever learn.
