വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

'എന്റെ ഭാഷ മലയാളം ആണ്.' — ഇവിടെ രണ്ടു നാമങ്ങൾ: 'ഭാഷ', 'മലയാളം'. ഒരു വാക്കിനും വാൽ ഇല്ല. 'ആണ്' അവസാനം.

Two nouns stand side by side — ഭാഷ 'language' and മലയാളം 'Malayalam' — and ആണ് at the end says they are the same thing. Neither noun takes any ending. This is the whole equational sentence you have been building since lesson 1, now doing new work: എന്റെ പേര് … ആണ്, എന്റെ നാട് … ആണ്, എന്റെ ഭാഷ … ആണ്.

'ആണ്' ചേരുമ്പോൾ: മലയാളം + ആണ് → മലയാളമാണ്; ഭാഷ + ആണ് → ഭാഷയാണ്; ഹിന്ദി + ആണ് → ഹിന്ദിയാണ്; തമിഴ് + ആണ് → തമിഴാണ്; ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് + ആണ് → ഇംഗ്ലീഷാണ്.

Watch the joins, because every one of them follows a habit you have already met. A final ം turns into മ (മലയാളം → മലയാളമാണ്, exactly like സുഖം → സുഖമാണ്). A final vowel grows a യ glide (ഭാഷയാണ്, ഹിന്ദിയാണ്). And the small ് at the end of തമിഴ് or ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് simply gives way (തമിഴാണ്, ഇംഗ്ലീഷാണ്). Say them aloud and the joins will start to feel inevitable.

'മലയാളം' ഭാഷ ആണ്, 'കേരളം' നാട് ആണ്. 'മലയാള ഭാഷ' — ഇതും ശരി. 'തമിഴ്' — അവസാനത്തെ അക്ഷരം 'ഴ'.

മലയാളം is the name of the language; before another noun it shortens to മലയാള, so മലയാള ഭാഷ 'the Malayalam language' is equally correct. Keep നാട് and ഭാഷ apart: കേരളം is the place, മലയാളം is the language. And note the last letter of തമിഴ് — the sound ഴ, which Malayalam shares with Tamil and almost nothing else does.
