'എന്റെ നാട് കേരളം ആണ്.' — 'നാട്' എന്നാൽ സ്വദേശം. ചെറിയ സ്ഥലം, വലിയ രാജ്യം — രണ്ടിനും 'നാട്' മതി. 'വീട്' എന്നാൽ ഭവനം.

നാട് is your native place, and the word stretches: a village, a district, a state, a whole country. So എന്റെ നാട് കേരളം ആണ് and എന്റെ നാട് ഇന്ത്യ ആണ് are both perfectly ordinary answers — give whichever size the conversation wants. വീട് is the building you live in. To ask, Malayalam prefers നിങ്ങളുടെ നാട് ഏതാണ്? — literally 'which is your native place?'

'എവിടെ' = where. 'ആണ്' ചേരുമ്പോൾ ഇടയിൽ ഒരു 'യ' വരുന്നു: എവിടെ + ആണ് → എവിടെയാണ്; ഇവിടെ + ആണ് → ഇവിടെയാണ്; അവിടെ + ആണ് → അവിടെയാണ്.

എവിടെ asks 'where'. Notice the small യ that appears when ആണ് glues on: എവിടെയാണ്?, ഇവിടെയാണ്, അവിടെയാണ്. That യ is not decoration — Malayalam refuses to let two vowels sit next to each other and slips a glide in between. The rule has a name and a whole lesson waiting for you in Arc B.

ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുക: 'കേരളം', 'ഇന്ത്യ', 'വീട്' — ഒരു വാക്കിനും വാൽ ഇല്ല. സ്ഥലത്തിന്റെ വാൽ മൂന്നാം ലെവലിൽ.

Notice that no word in this lesson carries an ending: കേരളം, ഇന്ത്യ, വീട് all stand bare. Malayalam does have a place ending — it is what turns കേരളം into 'in Kerala' — but you do not need it yet. Until level 3, ഇവിടെ and അവിടെ do all the work of saying where, and that is enough to hold a real conversation.

ഇനി അഞ്ചു പാഠങ്ങളും ഒരുമിച്ച് ഉറക്കെ പറയുക: 'നമസ്കാരം! എന്റെ പേര് … ആണ്. എന്റെ നാട് … ആണ്. എന്റെ വീട് ഇവിടെയാണ്.' പിന്നെ ചോദിക്കുക: 'നിങ്ങളുടെ പേരെന്ത്? നിങ്ങളുടെ നാട് ഏതാണ്?'

Put all five lessons together and say the whole thing out loud: നമസ്കാരം! എന്റെ പേര് … ആണ്. എന്റെ നാട് … ആണ്. എന്റെ വീട് ഇവിടെയാണ്. Then turn it round and ask: നിങ്ങളുടെ പേരെന്ത്? നിങ്ങളുടെ നാട് ഏതാണ്? That is a genuine first conversation — four sentences, no verbs beyond ആണ്, and nothing invented.
