What is your name?

'എന്ത്' — സാധനങ്ങൾ. 'ആര്' — ആളുകൾ. ചോദ്യപ്പദം സാധാരണയായി 'ആണ്' എന്നതിനോട് ചേരുന്നു: എന്ത് + ആണ് → എന്താണ്; ആര് + ആണ് → ആരാണ്. പേര് + എന്ത് → പേരെന്ത്.

എന്ത് asks about things ('what'), ആര് about people ('who'). Both normally fuse with ആണ്: എന്താണ്?, ആരാണ്?. And പേര് + എന്ത് contracts to പേരെന്ത് — the quick everyday way to ask a name. നിങ്ങളുടെ പേര് എന്താണ്? and നിങ്ങളുടെ പേരെന്ത്? are the same question.

മലയാളത്തിൽ 'you' മൂന്നാണ്. 'നീ' — കുട്ടികൾ, അടുത്ത കൂട്ടുകാർ. 'നിങ്ങൾ' — സാധാരണ മര്യാദ; ബഹുവചനവും ഇതുതന്നെ. 'താങ്കൾ' — കൂടുതൽ ബഹുമാനം, ഔപചാരികം.

Malayalam has three words for 'you'. നീ is intimate — children, close friends, and nobody else; used at the wrong moment it is rude. നിങ്ങൾ is the safe everyday polite form, and it doubles as the plural 'you all'. താങ്കൾ is more formal still: an official, a stranger you wish to honour, a letter. When in doubt, use നിങ്ങൾ.

ഓരോ 'you' വാക്കിനും സ്വന്തം രൂപം: നിന്റെ (നീ), നിങ്ങളുടെ (നിങ്ങൾ), താങ്കളുടെ (താങ്കൾ). ഇവ ഇപ്പോൾ ഒറ്റ വാക്കുകളായി പഠിക്കുക.

Each 'you' has its own possessive, standing beside എന്റെ 'my': നിന്റെ from നീ, നിങ്ങളുടെ from നിങ്ങൾ, താങ്കളുടെ from താങ്കൾ. Learn them as whole words for now — the small tail that builds them is a case ending, and it gets a lesson of its own in level 3.

ഇനി ഒരു ചെറിയ പരിചയം ഉറക്കെ പറയുക: 'നമസ്കാരം! ഞാൻ … . നിങ്ങളുടെ പേരെന്ത്?' പിന്നെ ഒരു കുട്ടിയോട്: 'നിന്റെ പേരെന്ത്?'

Say a short introduction aloud: നമസ്കാരം! ഞാൻ … . നിങ്ങളുടെ പേരെന്ത്? Then say the same thing to an imaginary child, switching the possessive: നിന്റെ പേരെന്ത്? Say both versions until the difference feels like politeness rather than grammar.
