Level 13 · Lesson 1 എഴുത്തുഭാഷയും സംസാരഭാഷയും
Written and spoken Malayalam
സാഹിത്യഭാഷയും സംസാരഭാഷയും തമ്മിലുള്ള അകലം, നാട്ടുഭേദങ്ങൾ, തത്സമ പദാവലി.
The distance between literary and spoken Malayalam, the regional dialects, and the Sanskrit layer.
ഓർക്കുക · You already know this
Twelve levels are behind you. Pick up a Malayalam newspaper or short story now and one thing will strike you: nobody speaks exactly what is printed. The book says അവൻ വരുന്നു; the house says അവൻ വരുവാ. Both are Malayalam. This chapter is about that gap — the last thing standing between you and real material.
സൂത്രങ്ങൾ · The rules
What these levels taught you is the written register — the one you need in order to read, and the one understood everywhere. Speech is shorter, faster and varies by district. Having the written form first is the right order: you can now pick the spoken one up by ear.
The shortening happens at the end, never at the beginning. So the front of any spoken sentence is already transparent to you and only the last two or three sounds feel new. നിന്റെ പേര് എന്താണ്? becomes നിന്റെ പേരെന്താ? — same words, trimmed tail.
If an editorial feels hard, it is not the grammar — you have the grammar. It is the vocabulary: തത്സമങ്ങൾ arriving thick and fast. So the work ahead of you is no longer grammatical but lexical, and that is a much easier kind of work.
പടിപടിയായി · Step by step

Now do this. Read one report in a Malayalam newspaper, watching the ends of the verbs. Then say the same report aloud as you would tell it to someone at home, in your own district's speech. One content, two registers — when you can move between them at will, you are no longer studying Malayalam from outside it.
