Level 7 · Lesson 5 അനുസ്വാരവും വിസർഗവും
Anusvāra and visarga
ം, ഃ എന്നീ രണ്ടു ചിഹ്നങ്ങളും, മലയാളത്തിലെ സംസ്കൃതപാളിയും — തത്സമം, തത്ഭവം.
The two signs ം and ഃ, and the Sanskrit layer they come from: തത്സമം and തത്ഭവം.
വായന · Reading
Look at four words you already know: മരം (tree), ഭക്ഷണം (food), സന്തോഷം (joy), ദുഃഖം (sorrow). All four end in a small circle, ം, and that sign has a name — അനുസ്വാരം. ദുഃഖം carries a second sign in the middle, ഃ, called വിസർഗം. These are the അം and അഃ that get chanted at the tail of the alphabet, and lesson 2 promised to come back to them: they are not vowels but signs added to a vowel.
വിശദീകരണം · Explanation
In the middle of a word the അനുസ്വാരം borrows the colour of whatever follows it. Write സംഗീതം (music) and you say a ങ; write സംഭവം (event) and you say a മ. The same one circle serves for സംശയം, സംസാരം, സംസ്കാരം. This is why the sign exists at all: one mark covering five different nasals, chosen automatically by the next letter. Level 8 will show you the grid that makes the choice.
ദുഃഖം is the written form; in ordinary speech many people say ദുക്കം. Both are Malayalam, but only the first belongs in writing, and the difference is a tiny example of something large: when a Sanskrit word enters Malayalam, the language either keeps it as it is or reshapes it to suit its own mouth. Those two fates have names, and they are the point of this lesson.
Every word from your first six levels falls into one of three groups. Malayalam's own old words: വീട്, കൈ, പാൽ, മരം, ചോറ്, നാട്. തത്സമം words taken straight from Sanskrit: പുസ്തകം, ഭക്ഷണം, സമയം, സന്തോഷം. തത്ഭവം words that changed on the way in: കണ്ണൻ from കൃഷ്ണൻ, ആശാൻ from ആചാര്യൻ. There is a rough test for the middle group — if you see ഷ, ക്ഷ, ജ്ഞ or ഃ, the word almost certainly came from Sanskrit. Modern writing keeps the തത്സമം form more often than not, which is why so much of your vocabulary looks Sanskrit on the page and sounds thoroughly Malayalam in the mouth.

ഉപയോഗിക്കുക · Use it
Take ten words from your earlier lessons and sort them into the three groups: Malayalam's own, തത്സമം, തത്ഭവം. When you are unsure, look for ഷ, ക്ഷ, ജ്ഞ or ഃ. Then say five words ending in ം out loud — മരം, ഉറക്കം, ഭക്ഷണം, സന്തോഷം, ജീവിതം — and feel your lips close on each one. That closing is the അനുസ്വാരം, and you have been producing it perfectly since your very first lesson.
