Level 6 · Lesson 14
Spoken vs written
The register split at last: what people say, what people write, and which one you should produce.

Anu, the book says ഞാൻ പോകുന്നു. But you say പോവുന്നു. Which one is right?
Both are right. പോകുന്നു is the written language, പോവുന്നു the spoken one.
I've heard ഇല്യ too. Isn't that wrong?
It is not wrong. You write ഇല്ല; when speaking, many people say ഇല്യ.
So which should I learn?
Produce the written forms, understand the spoken ones. Then you are comfortable anywhere.
And how do I speak at the office?
Formal at the office and in letters, informal with friends. Courtesy in both.
Explanation
Most everyday sentences have two shapes. Written പോകുന്നു is spoken പോവുന്നു; written ഇല്ല comes out as ഇല്യ; എന്താണ് shortens to എന്താ, അതാണ് to അതാ, എവിടെയാണ് to എവിടാ. The meaning is identical — speech simply wears the words down. This is why the audio has never quite matched your textbook, and nothing was wrong with either of them.
The rule for a learner is easy. Write only the written forms — a letter or an exam answer with ഇല്യ in it looks careless. When you speak, the written forms are still perfectly correct and nobody will laugh; you will simply sound a little bookish, which is a very safe place for a learner to stand. What you must not do is mix the two registers inside one sentence.
Politeness has its own three steps, and they are separate from the spoken-written split. നീ is for children and close friends, നിങ്ങൾ is ordinary courtesy, താങ്കൾ is formal. Commands climb the same stair: the bare ഇരിക്ക് is casual speech, ഇരിക്കൂ is the polite form you learned in level 4, and ദയവായി ഇരിക്കൂ is formal. With a stranger, choose നിങ്ങൾ and the -ഊ command and you will never be rude.

Say five sentences aloud twice over, once in each register: ഞാൻ ഇപ്പോൾ പോകുന്നു and then പോവുന്നു; ഇത് എന്താണ്? and then ഇത് എന്താ?; അവൻ ഇവിടെ ഇല്ല and then ഇല്യ. Doing it in pairs trains your ear to hear them as one word, not two. Then write the same five sentences down — and check that not one spoken form has crept onto the page.
