രണ്ടു തരം നിറപ്പദങ്ങൾ — ക്രിയയിൽനിന്നു വന്നവയും വെറും നാമങ്ങളും.

Malayalam has two kinds of colour word: participial ones and plain nouns.

വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

മലയാളത്തിലെ നിറപ്പദങ്ങൾ രണ്ടു തരം. ഒന്നാമത്തേത് ക്രിയയിൽനിന്നു വരുന്നു: വെളുക്കുക → വെളുത്ത, കറുക്കുക → കറുത്ത, ചുവക്കുക → ചുവന്ന. രണ്ടാമത്തേത് വെറും നാമങ്ങൾ: പച്ച, മഞ്ഞ, നീല.

Malayalam splits its colour words into two families. The first are participial: they are built from verbs — വെളുക്കുക 'to be white' gives വെളുത്ത, കറുക്കുക gives കറുത്ത, ചുവക്കുക gives ചുവന്ന. The second are plain nouns that simply stand in front of another noun: പച്ച, മഞ്ഞ, നീല. You do nothing to them at all — പച്ച ഇല, മഞ്ഞ കുട, നീല ബാഗ്.

രണ്ടു തരവും നാമത്തിന്റെ മുൻപിൽ നിൽക്കുന്നു, മാറുന്നില്ല: ചുവന്ന കുട, ചുവന്ന വസ്ത്രം, ചുവന്ന ബസ്. വാൽ നാമത്തിൽ മാത്രം: ചുവന്ന ബസ്സിൽ, വെളുത്ത വീട്ടിൽ.

Once made, both families behave exactly like the adjectives of the last two lessons. They stand before the noun, they never change for gender or number, and any case ending lands on the noun: ചുവന്ന ബസ്സിൽ 'in the red bus', വെളുത്ത വീട്ടിൽ 'in the white house'. Nothing whatever happens to ചുവന്ന or വെളുത്ത.

നിറത്തിന് നാമരൂപവും ഉണ്ട്: വെളുപ്പ്, കറുപ്പ്, ചുവപ്പ്. 'ഇത് ചുവന്ന കുട ആണ്' എന്നും 'ഈ കുടയുടെ നിറം ചുവപ്പ് ആണ്' എന്നും പറയാം. പച്ച, മഞ്ഞ, നീല എന്നിവ ഇതിനകം നാമങ്ങൾ ആണ്.

Each participial colour also has a noun beside it: വെളുപ്പ് whiteness, കറുപ്പ് blackness, ചുവപ്പ് redness. That gives you two ways to say the same thing — ഇത് ചുവന്ന കുട ആണ് with the adjective, or ഈ കുടയുടെ നിറം ചുവപ്പ് ആണ് 'this umbrella's colour is red' with the noun. For പച്ച, മഞ്ഞ and നീല there is nothing extra to learn: they are already nouns, so ഈ ബാഗിന്റെ നിറം നീല ആണ് works straight off.

ചുറ്റും നോക്കുക. ആറു സാധനം കണ്ടെത്തി ഓരോന്നിന്റെയും നിറം പറയുക: 'ഇത് ഒരു കറുത്ത ഫോൺ ആണ്.' 'ആ കുട മഞ്ഞ കുട ആണ്.' പിന്നെ നാമരൂപം കൊണ്ടും പറയുക: 'ഈ ഫോണിന്റെ നിറം കറുപ്പ് ആണ്.'

Look around you and name the colour of six things aloud, using the adjective first — ഇത് ഒരു കറുത്ത ഫോൺ ആണ്, ആ കുട മഞ്ഞ കുട ആണ്. Then say each one again the other way, with the colour noun and the genitive: ഈ ഫോണിന്റെ നിറം കറുപ്പ് ആണ്. Finish by answering the question for yourself: നിങ്ങൾക്ക് ഏത് നിറം ഇഷ്ടം ആണ്?
